Khujir river
Mongolia had made a pledge to declare up to 30 % of its territory as protected areas. This goal is also reflected in Mongolia?s MDGs targets by 2015. As of today, about 14% of Mongolia?s territory has been declared as specially protected areas. To meet the above target, it is essential to establish locally/community protected areas. In many cases, locally protected are protected and managed better than specially protected areas. The grant is given to a local women community group to protect a big and long range mountain valley together with surrounding ecosystems, and to establish a locally protected area by starting to conduct some nature protection and conservation activities like planting of fruit seedlings, blocking free passage of vehicles, putting a control point at the mouth of the main valley, etc. By July 2005, there were built 2 houses for watchman and workers who will be working to protect the mountain valley. The area is to be declared as a locally/community protected area soon. The project is working on that. More fruit planting activities will take place.
