Conservation of white stork (Ciconia Ciconia) population in the lower current of Aravan river by improving its habitat (nest making and increasing of forage reserve) and support of local white stork conservation traditions.
In the present time the lower of Aravansay River is used for rice, cotton, maize, perennial grasses growing. Agricultural developing has reduced population of amphibia, fish, small mammals, which are the main feeding sources of Ciconia Ciconia stork. Cutting down of dried up trees decrease possibility for nests making.
The main goal of the project is to prevent decrease of Ciconia Ciconia stork population by creation of rice small ponds and fish breeding, which are the only feeding source for stork and at the same time to stimulate the interests of local people in preventing dried up trees, supporting the national tradition to protect stork because they bring luck (master of home will have luck, if stork settle in his homestead).
In the course of project implementation it is expected to obtain the following results:
Ecological
- building and fitting out the places suitable for nests construction
- decreasing persistent organic pollution as a result of refusing from substance against malaria mosquito and increasing forage reserve due to fish-breeding in rice small ponds
Economic
- local people will be occupied with new activity (fish-breeding)
Socio-cultural
- local population will get support in stork protection tradition from international organization
- understanding of wilderness dependence from economic activity scale will strengthen
- decreasing of malaria sickness rate
- raising public awareness about stork life, their necessity and importance for sustainable ecosystem whose resources provide vital activity of community
Actions to be undertaken by Public Foundation «Bionika»:
1. Conducting seminars and round table.
2. Building bird-nests for storks.
3. Promote indigenous tradition LYALYAK (believe that storks brings happiness).
4. Publishing posters with storks.
5. Create small ponds along the river and launch frog larva.
6. Organize stork-club among the pupil.
7. Inventory of stork and create map of habitat.
8. Organize festival of White Stork.
9. Information campaign
Mostly uzbek people from Chekabad and Tepekurgan Ayil Okmotu of Aravan rayon, employees of Osh University, members of PF ?Eco-oyi?, workers of Osh Regional Heath strengthening center of Ministry of Health, officers of Osh regional office of WHO project related to combat malaria will be involved in project implementation.
The main project activity will take place in vicinity of Kyzyl-Abad, Jakshilyk, Moldo Irys, Maksym Top, Kochotogor, Kesee, Arap, Uygurabad, Boston, Janyjol villages of Chekabad and Tepekurgan Ayil Okmotu, Aravan rayon, Osh oblast.

Project Characteristics and Results
Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
Information campaign and training actions of the project are directed to demonstrate for local population the necessity of stork protection that is important for Aravan river ecosystem and help to strengthen the health of local people. It will be emphasized that Ciconia Ciconia stork is important for global ecosystem as well. Protection of white stork is a direct contribution of local population into conservation of global biodiversity.
Capacity - Building Component
It is likely that part of the population will take great interest in fish breeding that extends their opportunity to acquire new professions.
