Conservation of juniper forest in buffer zone of National Nature Park ?Kyrgyzata? by creation of alternative sources of timber.
Conservation of juniper forest in buffer zone of National Nature Park ?Kyrgyzata? by creation of alternative sources of timber.
National Nature Park ?Kyrgyzata? was created with purpose to preserve original juniper forests. Illegal deforestation can not be stopped by forbidden and retributive measures because local people do not have other source of wood for heating, timber, horticulture and agriculture sundries (handle for shovels, picks and rakes).
The main goal of the project is to reduce illegal poaching and cutting trees nearby/ or in protected forest of National Park Kyrgyzata through the planting of local fast growing trees and fruit bushes in the buffer zone to meet local people needs in wood and timber, demonstration of using non-timber forest products, raising public awareness about biodiversity, organizing public patrol and information campaign
In the course of project implementation it is expected obtaining of the following results:
- Considerable reduction of illegal deforestation of juniper forests in National Nature Park ?Kyrgyzata?
- planting of local fast growing trees that will provide inhabitants with timber, raw materials for horticulture and agriculture sundries (handle for shovels, picks and rakes) and fire-wood.
- it is likely attitude to juniper forests will change (like to wood sources only)
- it is possible fast growing trees and workshop on horticulture and agriculture sundries manufacturing will lead to developing of new economic activities (handicraft industry), which in the present time is restricted by cattle breeding and plant cultivation
Actions to be undertaken by Public Foundation «Bios»:
1. Conducting seminars and round table.
2. Establishing nursery-forest and planting quickly growing trees in 20 hectares.
3. Fencing the plantings.
4. Organizing workshop for processing quickly growing timber.
5. Constructing hydraulic pump for watering.
6. Making research of project effectiveness.
7. Information campaign
5 families from Kurgaktektir village of Kyrgyzata ayil okmot, 120 schoolchildren from this village, employees of National Nature Park ?Kyrgyzata?, workers of Nookat Forestry, members of PF ?Bios? and ?Eco-oyi?, officers of Osh University will be involved in project implementation.
The main project activity will take place in Karakoy village (Kurgaktektir plot) of) Kyrgyzata Aiyl Okmet, Nookat rayon, Osh oblast, Kyrgyzstan
The expected benefits of the project, including environmental and livelihood benefits
- reduction of illegal deforestation in relict juniper forests, which are ecosystems of global biodiversity importance
- creation of fast growing trees plantations, which meet local people?s needs in wood, timber and raw materials for horticulture and agriculture sundries (handle for shovels, picks and rakes)
