Huay Nam Rin Biodiversity Conservation
Situated in the Indo-Chinese sub region of the bio-unit, the target location represents an integrated part of forest ecosystems and fresh water ecosystems. Target population comprising two ethnic minority groups ,i.e. the Hmong and Kareni. The area has just been recovered from logging business with some portion becoming cultivated land for cash crop and orchards. During dry season, the forest area portion is under imminent threat of wild fire ? an aftermath of inappropriate management of agro-waste by farmers. In addition, illegal timbering business is still witnessed.

Baan Huay Nam Rin is a forefront to fight the fire before blazing into the Doi Mon Koke and Inthanon
National Park. The village committee had gathered together to fight the fire through surveillance, without any support from outside. So, this activities should be substantiated through people agreement, established providence fund for firefighter and networking with surrounding communities in the east and west.

Through participatory process, the group had planned activities would contribute to reversing environment degradation at community , regional and global level by rehabilitation and re-introduction of wild species, reduction of wild fire, maintenance of humidity in the area and promotion of environmentally-friendly indigenous knowledge.

Activities to be carried out under project:

- Launching reforestation in community forest and conserving
- Surveying and compiling biological resources
- Establishing endemic herbal garden
- Building small weirs to maintain humidity
- Establishing fire-fighting group and rotating fund
- Convening seminars and study tours
- Conducting community forum
- Launching cultural activities with networks
- Conducting monitoring and evaluation
- Establishing Website for project
- Composing native songs and airing on Hmong community radio
- Producing other type of communication material such as tract, article, CD ,Video and disseminating in annual festival

Anticipated Results of Projects:

- Emergence of community botanical garden with classification and related data & information
- Reduced number and frequency of wild-fire
- Tangible increased community participation and cooperation
- Demonstrated increase awareness in sustainable use of biological resources
- Emergence of networks sharing experience
- Increased capacity witnessed through collective planning, cooperation and M & E
- Continued communication and relation of networks
- Increased number of Hmong , other cultural groups and mainstream Thai with knowledge about GEF , current world condition and showing interest to cooperate
