I. The progress report was received on 28 September 2005 , with 13 photos showing construction
of organic compost facility in progress as well as training. The immediate outputs are as follows:

-The facility being capable of producing one ton of /day of pelletted fertilizer
- 35 core group members being able to put what is learnt into practice

II. The project was visited on December 8 , 2005. The findings and observations are as follows:

About 10 out of 35 project members and the visiting team met and discussed at the organic compost ?production facility of the group. Situated amid a paddy field, the facility comprised a donated piece of land, a small building to house equipment to produce organic compost. A demonstration plot to try the compost was at the immediate vicinity. Majority of project members practice paddy farming , some with fruit trees and vegetable. Members allotted an appropriate portion of paddy fields for other edible crops and were encourage to partake in the production of compost for use under the management of the group who met some once a month to share experience. Excessive amount would be supplied to non-project member at request.

A fruit garden of one project member was visited. It appeared to be a fairly natural farming-less plowing, less weeding, and no chemicals. The paddy demonstration plot was seen with several native trees of edible types thriving along the dikes and marginal areas. At present date, the project related that no comparatively promising outputs were witnessed yet, except a better bodily health and some saving of production cost.

The group is one of 21 members of the Phijit Provincial Toxic-free network which has been active to promote consumption of toxic-free agricultural products within the province.

III. The project participated in the mid-course evaluation workshop of Thailand-Year-6 GEF/SGP , organized on 25-27 January 2006 . It was one of 27 projects sending project leaders or representatives to report to the workshop on progress of activities, immediate outputs/results that could be witnessed or observed, problems / issues and solution.

With only a few exception, majority of projects concisely reported progress and summarized immediate outputs and results. The report format included from power point to photos to dissemination materials, and to verbal presentation. There was one project bringing product of chemical-free vegetable for sale and show at the venue.

All presentations mentioned about problems and issues, with varying degree, but they had been corrected or rectified. Or at least, the project possessed idea or approach to do so. However, there were a few projects that presented problems and hot issues on environment soliciting further discussion and advice from participants.

On the final day, participants spent half-an-hour sharing idea on forging future networking of the year-6 projects and submitted approach for sustainability. Majority of participants agreed to be tied by natural network, without any regulation or commitment, but hearts and minds. There were two members pledging their times and skill to help others according to their availability.

As a reminder and incentives to ensure most effective implementation of remaining activities, the NC proposed the idea of strategic project where successful SGP projects could gather together so that community actions affecting global benefits would be clearer.

The workshop had seen substantial sharing of experience, especially on related issues of project activities. Somehow, it was felt that the remaining activities would be carried out to their completion. Another evidence, a natural network of environment was formed with a lot of participants winning one another hearts.

IV. The completion report was received on 28 June 2006 with the following details:

Undertaken Activities:

1. Building a facility for producing organic fertilizer pellet
2. Launching training and putting into practice on production of organic fertilizer by local resources
persons for 35 group members
3. Closely monitoring the result of the plots and continuous dissemination

Result:

? The facility being capable of producing one ton of /day ( eight hours) of pelletted fertilizer
? Cultivated area of about 25 ha continuously being applied with the produced organic fertilizer with
totally none insecticide
? 31 core group members being able to put what was learnt into practice with commitment s
? Evinced increased conservation awareness of surrounding communities through their trying small
plots with organic fertilizer

Dissemination / Public Relation of project

The project leader , also the coordinator of Phijit Provincial Vegetable Network , participated in the Knowledge Management Institute activities by presenting itself in a VDO filming which later was disseminated at national level.

At provincial level, the project was made known among network members through boards. The project and toxic-free vegetable group are serving currently as a learning venue for Tayart Kaset Student ( farming descendant students) and farmers groups who are planting toxic-free vegetable and producing organic compost.

Participatory Evaluation: Conducted periodically with final evaluation in January 2006.

Methods: Discussion with experimenting farmers in fields.
Impact: Listening to the farmers led to a sense of positive impact of the project. Organic farming was
on the agenda of more and more farmers because negative effects of agricultural chemicals
were evident. Moreover, local public health office cooperated with the project in launching ?
Safe Food Project ? . To a certain extent, the project had contribution to influencing the
initiaion of construction of a bigger facility for producing organic in the Tambol. The facility has
a capacity of 10 tons/day , worth Baht: one million and is financed by the Department of
Land Development.

Learning about the accomplishment of the project , the local administrative organization (TAO)
had set aside budget of Baht: 140,000 for training farmers on the production of organic
compost.

Future Plan: The project would continue to produce fertilizer for group members , and in case of
extra , would sell to surrounding communities. Besides, the project planned to
produce soil, plant trees to be model and offer option for farmers to reduce
dependence upon chemical substances.

Note on a Brief Visit: On July 7, 2006 , the NC , three members of the adjacent THA-04-11: Livelihood
Development by Renewable Energy and two members of THA-05-23: Revival
of Farming Livelihood paid a brief visit to the project and found that every 16th
day of the month, group members participate in the production of organic
fertilizer. It was also found that the produced quantity was not up to the
demand. A Friday Market was found established in the provincial town of
Phijit selling toxic- free farming products to local consumer.
