Pellettizing Organic Fertilizer
Situated in the Chaopahaya?s lower Nan River Basin, the project location is a low flat land suitable for agriculture such as paddy plantation, horticulture and other cash crop. The farming population here is about 90 % of the total population who relies on rainwater or pumped underground water.
Modern agricultural practice which unscrupulously applies chemical substances in term of fertilizers, pesticide and herbicide has resulted in degradation of ecosystems and human health. Native species in paddy field , a sure sources of food for community members, has been dwindling in numbers. Some spots have become futile due to the effect of chemicals.
The cultivated area in Tambol Phairob covers over 6,400 ha where the estimated use of chemical
fertilizer is 250 kg. per ha. On 13 July 2003, Tambol Phairaob Public Health office conducted body check on 30 community members and found that 26 had chemical residual in body at dangerous level, 2 at risky and only 2 at safe level.
Realizing the abundance of agro-waste in locality such as animal manure, rice husk, rice bran and molasses, and the threat from prevailing modern agricultural practice, the group had initiated the production of organic farming and scaling up its use to gradually replace chemicals ones. The project would contribute to the reversal of degradation trend of Nan River and eventually the Gulf of Thailand/South China Sea
Project participants and/or beneficiaries:
-31 group members are direct beneficiaries.
-42 families in surrounding villages are secondary target group
-Tambol Administrative Organization
-Tambol and District Office of Agriculture
-Non-Formal Education District Office
-Public Health Office at Tambol, District and Provincial Level
-Raum Phatthana Phijit Foundation
Activities to be carried out under project:
-Building a facility for producing organic fertilizer pellet
-Producing organic fertilizer pellets for uses and sales
-Launching training and putting into practice on production of organic fertilizer by local resources persons
-Closely monitoring the result of the plots and continuous dissemination
Anticipated Results/Immediate Outputs of Project:
-The facility being capable of producing one ton of /day of pelletted fertilizer
-31 core group members being able to put what is learnt into practice
-About 50 % of reduction of chemical fertilizer use
- 52 surrounding villages becoming members or network of the group , replicating the practice
