Rehabilitation of Paddy Field for Sustainable Environment
Three decades of introduction of yearly second and third crops has resulted in inappropriate management of agricultural waste and unregulated application of chemical substances. Field burning to get rid of standing straws and prepare soil for the next crop has been a usual practice which gradually reduces soil potential. In order to maximize or maintain the yield, chemical fertilizer pesticide and fungicide have been used to an extent that they affect water quality ,both surface and underground, as well as biodiversity useful to agriculture. The chemical run-off from the fields directly contributes to the degradation of the Gulf of Thailand?s Tha Cheen River - the river being
ranked as the most polluted in the country.
With preexisting capacity, the group proposes to reverse the environment degradation through reduction of field burning, cessation of chemical cycle, promotion of organic farming and maintenance of biodiversity useful to agriculture, all of which accrues wider environment benefit, especially , the ecosystems of the Gulf of Thailand and in term of reversing land degradation and avoiding added green house gas to the atmosphere.
Project participants and/or beneficiaries:
1. 350 farming families are primary participants and beneficiaries.
2. Forestry Industrial Organization contributing to formulating community plan and playing
coordinating role
3. Department of Agriculture , Department of Agricultural Extension and Department of Land
Development providing technical support
4. Tambol Administrative Organization proposing plan for up-scaling and further support
Activities to be carried out under project:
1.Launching training and workshop on management and environmental know-how
2. Putting what is learnt into practice
3. Allotting plots for demonstration of rehabilitation of paddy field
4. Conducting training and study tours
Anticipated Results/Immediate Outputs of Project:
1.Emergence of collective plan for six villages as a tambol development plan
2. Produced 17,500 litres/year of organic solution and 3,500 tons / years
3. Observable increased biodiversity useful for agriculture
4. Increased selling price by 10 %
5. Avoidance of field burning for 560 ha, thus certain amount of CO2
ranked as the most polluted in the country.
