Processing Fishes with Biomass-Solar Energy
Mostly farmers, the target population earn their living through planting rice ,edible root and a few other crops. The practice depends upon the annual rain thus affects the yield, selling price and livelihood security.
The main goal of the group is to promote and build capacity of community to an extent of self-reliance level by applying local knowledge to add value to community product matching the demand and standard of both domestic and foreign market. One major activity of the group is food processing where plentiful fishes of native species are processed into fermented fish ,dried fish and fried fish then placed into market. The activity offers a solution to precarious price of agricultural products.
In matching the standard of the FDA, not only hygienic regulation has to be strictly followed, but environmentally-friendly practice also. The main concern for the latter had led to the project ideas and proposed activities on application of solar energy and biomass energy from fish waste and other types of biomass that are locally available and abundant.
Apart from promotion and demonstration of application of renewable energy which would contribute to stabilizing the emission of green house gas, the project offers potential benefits on international water by reducing disposal of waste , into the nearby Tha Cheen River-the dirtiest river in Thailand.
Project participants and/or beneficiaries:
- 30 families who are members of the group are primary participants and beneficiaries.
- Institute of International Energy Conservation providing technical support
- Department of Cooperatives Extension
- Tambol Administrative Organization proposing plan for up-scaling and further support
Activities to be carried out under project:
1. Building biogas facilities and putting into use for frying fishes
2. Procuring and installing solar dryers and putting into use for drying fishes
3. Launching seminars, training and study tours
Anticipated Results/Immediate Outputs of Project:
- Approximate avoidance of use of commercial canned gas by 225 kg/month
- Comparatively cleaner environment being observed and witnessed
- Improved quality of dried fish product
- Saved time for food processing by 30 %
- Acquired increased capacity of target population through demonstration of knowledge on solar energy principle and energy conservation
