Disposal of Animal Manure for Renewable Energy Development
Location of the five districts is a catchment areas and ecological portion of the Gulf of Thailand?s Songkhla Lagoon where traditional farming and husbandry have been widely practiced as main sources of income and livelihood.Ranked as number one in husbandry among southern provinces, the provincial authority has initiated the idea to turn the province into a ?Cowboy Town.? Two major farm animals are hogs and cows.
While these animals produce ,yearly and continuously, manure in a great quantity, there has not been sufficient appropriate disposal practice. Usually, the manure is left unattended posing environmental problem in term of unpleasant odour and water pollution. The problem seems to be increasing in term of magnitude.
With successful demonstration and experience from year-4 project THA-02-23 ?Disposal of Animal Manure for Renewable Energy Development? launched in 2003, the network planned to replicate the activities for its members in five other districts. Not only would the projects contribute to reducing local environmental problem, but promotion of renewable energy technology also. Therefore, the project contribute to the promotion of two GEF focal areas- Climate Change and International Water.
Project participants and/or beneficiaries:
- 40 families in five districts who are members of the network are primary participants and beneficiaries.
- The 12th region Office of Renewable Energy Development and Energy Conservation in Songkhla Province providing technical support
- The Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives playing participating role in the working
Group as an advisor
Activities to be carried out under project:
1. Building 40 biogas facilities ( 2 -metre dia. X 2 metres) and putting into use
2. Launching seminars, training and open forum
Anticipated Results/Immediate Outputs of Project:
1. Emergence of at least 40 families who continuously utilize biogas for energy consumption
: Note: One family consumes 3 cans of gas (15 kg/can ) per month at average
2. The savings of approximately Baht: 248,400: / year from canned cooking gas obtainable from the market
3. Observable increased capacity of stakeholders through demonstration of active participation and acquired knowledge on environment conservation
