Promotion of Community Product by Native Species in Sustainable Agricultural System
The promotion of mono-cash crops four decades ago has rendered the soil and ecosystems of target area seriously degradable. In spite of a quite permanent low price of mono-cash crops starting in the last decade, the one like tapioca and sugar cane are still primary option for many farmers in the northeast, especially, when a big scale ethanol plant was proposed in the area.
It is evident that the four-decade agricultural practices in conjunction with current untoward promotion of unproved scientific bio- products have threatened biodiversity in forest/agro-ecosystems and northeastern life style. But this is not the end of the story.
Witnessing three recent incidences in the project area, i.e. the outbreak of bird flu, the propagation of GMO papaya, and the on-going research with 11 native species of rice, community members felt the imminent threat upon their livelihood in three aspects: unsafe food for consumption, contamination of native species and monopolization of supra national corporation on food security.
The club initiates the project to reverse this trends and maintain the northeastern life style through conserving local biodiveristy and its ecosystems which is a portion of the larger Indo-Chinese sub region of the bio-unit , contributing to regional and global benefit.
Project participants and/or beneficiaries:
1. Community members of the six target villages are primary beneficiaries and project participants.
2. Other participating organizations:
- Muang Phol Village Headmen and Kamnan Club
- Tambol Administrative Organizations
- Muang Phol Civil Right Protecting Club
- Other environmentally-friendly agricultural groups in Muang Phol District
Activities to be carried out under project:
1. Launching capacity building through seminars, training and experience-sharing forum on self-reliant agriculture and native species
2. Putting into practice what are learnt in 1
3. Continuously launching meeting among network of farmers and network of local leaders
4. Launching technical seminars on approach of local farmers and conservation of salubrious native species
Anticipated results/Immediate Outputs of project:
1. Collection of eight species of rice, 13 species of fruit and vegetable, nine species of trees and a certain amount of domesticated animals.
2. emergence of the followings:
- Four resources persons
- 30 families of native species agriculture
- At least 60 families reducing dependence upon chemical substances and gradually replacing with
organic matters.
2. Evinced intention of community leaders in six tambols on conservation of northeastern livelihood
3. Evinced self-confidence in conservation of native species and relevant traditional events among
participating farmers
