Chao Lao Fishing Community
Formerly known as one of the richest spots in the eastern coast of the Gulf of Thailand, the Chao Lao bay now is facing with dwindling amount of water species. The most outstanding threat has been over-fishing by large-scale entrepreneurs who misapply technology such as tempting lights. The practice has tremendously reduced number of fishes in the area and rendered damage to the coral reef. Evidently and easy to understand, it directly adversely affects livelihood of small scale fishermen in the area who has been practicing traditional small scale fishery for generation.
Two years back , target communities had launched rehabilitating activities by using local knowledge providing temporary habitats for marine species and it was proven to be successful approach. Some long-gone species had reappeared after the habitats were in place. The community begins to have hope.
As most of materials used for assembling the habitat are bio-degradable, it is to be replaced every two years. Currently, the habitat is being laid three km. from shoreline and with 10 k.m long. In order to upscale the activities and secure more fishing communities, the project proposed to extend the habitat line from 10 km. to 30 km. Besides, in order to guarantee maximum effectiveness of the project, building capacity for community members, especially, youth group needed to be launched simultaneously.
Project participants and/or beneficiaries:
1. Community members of the 20 target villages are primary beneficiaries and project participants.
2. Other participating organizations:
- The Department of Coastal Natural Resources playing fishery law and regulation enforcing role
- The Chanthaburi Provincial Council providing financial support in capacity building
- Tambol Khlongkhud providing education on fishery laws
Activities to be carried out under project:
1. Laying down artificial habitats along the beach for 30 km, using mostly biodegradable material in locality
2. Laying down nursery for crustacean to generate income
3. Launching capacity building through workshop and camp youth
Anticipated results/Immediate Outputs of project:
1. Approximately 50 % time saving per catch for an average fisherman
2. Observable secured livelihood security through increase number of small fishing boats by two
3. Emergence of fund for sustainable management of coastal natural resources
4. About 700-800 community members being added into the project
