Umgungundlovu Indigenous Institute

The project aims to consolidate and coordinate sustainable conservation and development strategy which recognises and respects the role which the community has played in the responsible utilisation and management of the natural environment. The project will also aim to advance environmental awareness of local and global environmental issues and problems within the Amadiba Community, and to promote cognisance of these in local conservation and development initiatives and effort through the establishment of an environmentally based indigenous institute for the Amadiba Tribal Authority.

Policy Impact

Activities identified in the proposal has the aim of raising community awareness of sustainable development and campaigning against the proposed coastal mining development and national highway in the Wild Coast.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Public awareness is a central component of this project where this will be done through community consultative meetings and workshops. The project undertakes this activity as a result of the proposed developments in the Wildcoast and unite community opposition to these developments which will threaten one of WWF's Ecoregions of Global significance.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The Indigenous Knowledge Institute will be the focal point for sustainable livelihood activities, namely the Amadiba Adventures and the Ufudu Flyfishing partnership.

Notable Community Participation

The community is a partner in this project through the Amadiba Coastal Community Development Association (ACCORDA Trust). The project proposal was developed in partnership with the trust and implementation and monitoring will be done with full participation from the community.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

The project is being implemented in partnership with the Xhosa people one of the indigenous groups in South Africa. The project will support indigenous people in promoting indigenous knowledge systems, cultural traditions, storytelling and a holistic approach to nature society and their social relationships.

Capacity - Building Component

The project will build community capacity in the management and implementation of the grant. The project will furthermore increase the capacity and confidence of local people to engage in environmental initiatives and develop local solutions.

Gender Focus

Women and youth has been targeted in the design of the project as their are the primary natural resource users.
