Community-based Integrated Biodiversity Conservation, Sustainable Farming and Ecotourism development of Forikrom Boten Caves and Traditional Shrine
The main objective of the project is to promote biodiversity conservation through the restoration of degraded land and Forikrom boten sacred groves for ecotourism development and improvement in the welfare of the people of Forikrom. The activities to be carried out under project are:
1. Creation and sustainable management of natural resources around the boten caves: This component will lead to the creation and sustainable management of 100 ha natural forests around the boten caves to conserve biodiversity and sustainable utilize the guano in Forikrom. Community based natural resource management plans will be developed to guide the community manage the resources. The community will enact bye-laws and guidelines to manage the resource and ensure that the area is gazetted as community resource management area by the District Assembly with the endorsement of the Traditional Council and the Ministry of Lands and Forestry. The component will educate and create awareness of the importance of the boten caves as potential bat sanctuary, train the communities to manage wildfires and establish community nursery to provide seedlings for enrichment planting and rehabilitation of degraded areas.
2. Capacity Development of the youth farmers in organic agriculture using guano. This component will strengthen the capacities of 300 youth in Forikrom, Fiaso and Tanoso to practice sustainable organic farming utilizing the guano to promote biodiversity conservation and improve on the livelihood of the people. The activity will also promote agroforestry among the farmers operating within the community resource management area; ensure the adoption of soil improvement fertility practices and incorporation of trees on farms.
3. Promotion of community Ecotourism: In collaboration with the Ghana Tourist Board the ecotourism potential of the boten caves and the traditional shrine will be developed and promoted including the construction of climbing supporters and steps, scenery site labels and trails. . A community ecotourism information and resource management centre will be constructed and equipped with traditional facilities to promote and create intensive ecotourism awareness. Private developers will be encouraged to develop tourists? facilities around the area. A tourism development plan will be developed and implemented to provide linkages to other tourist attractions in the District. Tourist guards and home-keepers will be identified and trained to promote the area.
4. Establishment of 30 ha woodlot around the caves: The main activities will include formation and training of tree planting groups, establishment of a community nursery at Forikrom and supply of seedling to farmers
