Rescue of endangered high altitude tree species at Ixchiguán
Training and implementation of forestry activities related to the rescue of endangered and endemic high-altitude forest tree species.
Objectives: To rescue six endangered high altitude forest species with emphasis on the high altitude fir Abies guatemalensis, an endemic species of Guatemala, and five more that suffer from non-sustainable use threats at a local level. /This project will develop a series of training workshops in six communities and establish one tree nursery in each one of these communities which will be maintained and attended by local committees. The grant permits the hiring of one project coordinator and two forestry promoters, which are locally hired and trained by a forestry engineer. The first year is devoted to training activities and tree nursery development, and the second year is dedicated to the establishment and maintenance of definitive tree plantations on participant?s lots which will be protected from domestic animals and fires.
