Restoration of degraded pastures around of and improvement of a socio-ecological condition in Zhalanash village of the Aral Sea area
As a result of shrinkage of the Aral sea, the climate of the region has changed. Flora and fauna of the area become degraded. There is now a new desert with the area of 38 thousand square km., and it continues increasing. The dried up sites of the sea and delta of the rivers become natural stores and sources of polluting substances.
Zhalanash village is located in this zone with a strong wind blows, causing dusty storms. The winds carry salt from a surface of the dried bottom of the sea for greater distances, and that leads to salinization and degradations of agricultural grounds. The local population is engaged in cattle breeding and fishery. Because of ovepasturing close to the village (on distance of 3-6 km), the deserted zone with sandy barchans was formed. Vegetation is very poor.
The purpose of the project is restoration of the degraded pastures round Zhalanash village and improvement of social-ecological situation in the village. To achieve the goal, a green belt alongside the dam for protection against dust storms is created, melons and gourds will be planted with use of thawed snow. To restore the pastures round the village it is planned to arrange forage crops sowing and "umbellate" pastures setting up.
Expected results:
1. Starting restoration process of the pastures around the village Zhalanash.
2. Increase of efficiency of the dustproof dam by landing trees alongside it .
3. Cultivation of melons and gourds cultures for inhabitants of the village
4. Raising awareness of the local population in environmental issues
5. Improvement of ecological situation in the village.
