Sturgeon (Assistance to development of commodity sturgeon breeding in Atyrau and Mangystau areas for preservation and reproduction of the sturgeon in Caspian sea)
Poaching and non-observance of limits and quotas for sturgeon fishes catching, deterioration and of reduction of the natural habitat of the sturgeon fishes in Caspian sea have led to that, since 90th, catastrophic decrease in stocks of sturgeon fishes is observed in the region. At the same time, the sturgeon species of Caspian sea possess exclusive value, both as representatives of the most ancient group of the osteochondral species, and as an objects of the raised commercial demand (caviar and fish production). Sturgeon is included in the list of CITES.

Despite of the measures undertaken by the federal bodies to protect the sturgeon species like strengthening penal sanctions, interdiction for industrial catching in the sea, artificial reproduction, obvious increase in number and improvement of the sturgeon population in Caspian sea is not observed. As a result, limits and volume of catching annually decrease.

The project is directed on preservation of the sturgeon species on Caspian sea, implementation of alternative economic activities, raising employment of the local population by means of development of commodity sturgeon breeding in Caspian Sea. The basic purpose of the project is actively assisting to development of commodity sturgeon breeding in the Caspian region, as one of alternative for conservation of the sturgeon species biodiversity through propagation, training and involvement of local authorities, local communities and business-sector into the project.

Within the project framework a regional resource training-center on commodity sturgeon breeding will be established, a complex information programme will be developed and realized to attract local authorities, state management departments, donors, business-sector, investors into development of commodity sturgeon breeding and creation of commodity sturgeon facilities. The centre will render consulting services to the private and legal entities, realize information campaigns. As a result of the project organizational and technical centre will be established to promote development of commodity sturgeon breeding in the region, additional financial resources will be obtained, a group of people possessing necessary knowledge and skill to further promote and develop sturgeon facilities will be trained, experts group on commodity sturgeon breeding will be generated.
