Natural resources conservation in the Manchón Guamuchal, in Coatepeque, Quetzaltenango
Environmental education activities at three communities, endangered sea turtles rescue activities and mangrove rescue activities at a RAMSAR declared wetland and related ecosystems.
Objectives:
1)To establish a nature information center for visitors at the Manchón Guamuchal main point of public entry.2)To provide continuity to efforts of environmental education and sustainable use of mangroves and endangered species of sea turtles. /This project will establish a public information center about the local wetlands natural resources, provide pamphlets and information prepared by local people to visitors, continue the environmental education activities through reforestation of mangroves with local people that volunteer for this activity and maintain an adequate record of artificial nests for three species of endangered sea turtles from eggs that are donated by local people who collect this resource.

Notable Community Participation
Outstanding. Achieved the rescue of approx. 2,000 sea turtles (Lepidochelis olivacea) with the participation of 40 community volunteers; an environmental education program achieve a coverage of 4,500 children on 6 local schools and 4 regional high schools, that participate in the recovery of 10 Has. of mangroves. Additionally, approx. 500 local tourists receive biodiversity information of the Manchón Guamuchal RAMSAR site on national holidays.
