Promotion of Cultivation and Conservation of Tunceli Garlic (Allium tuncelianum) Project - Phase II
Tunceli garlic (Allium Tuncelianum) which is an endemic species, exist in the world only in Tunceli and especially at the foothill of Munzur mountains. Allium Tuncelianum (A.T )is facing with the danger of deplation because of insensible harvesting of the suburb people. A.T has also profitable feature for suburb people which can be harvesting in a year approximately 8-10 tonnes the obstructions in front of A.T can be heading under 3 titles.
1: Unconscious people don?t pay attention to protect A.T
2: İt is very widespread to sell the A.T because of destitution
3: Not constituting a comprehensive protecting and improving
program.
Because of this reasons to protect and cultivate A.T in its original place and to construct the infrastructure of the work,the project is presented to GEF-SGP. Have applied between april 2003 and november 2004.
İn first phase it has been investigated the conditions of cultivating A.T in its original place. Later it has been costitute the market condition. Obtaining data after this work costitute the second phase of the project.
-Starting to seeding widespreadly A.T in 4 year.
-Beside the existing market of A.T devoloping the new cultivating A.T?s introduction.
-bringing the producer into institutional structure as ?cooperative?, so that supplying the projects continuity and protecting the A.T in nature.

Notable Community Participation
The project involves the locals very much, in fact the landthat cultivation is carried out has been bought by the farmers. With the first phase of the project, the physiological characteristics of the plant has been identified, with the second phase broad cultivation of the plant is aimed. The project aims to replace the naturally collected garlic with the cultivated one, thus both legalising the product as well as converting it to a sustainable income generating activity
