Rehabilitation of natural productivity of soils and decrease of landslide formation risk by planting wood and bush vegetation in the watershed plot of forest and steppe belt of southern slope of Atoinok Range.
Rehabilitation of natural productivity of soils and decrease of landslide formation risk by planting wood and bush vegetation in the watershed plot of forest and steppe belt of southern slope of Atoinok Range.
Because of almost year-round keeping of cattle on village side pastures around Tegene village the land degradation processes go very quickly. Grass cover is almost destroyed by the cattle and wood and bush vegetation are destroyed by the population for heating needs. There is reduction of habitat of such endemic species of plants such as Petunnikov?s almond (Amygdalus petunnikovii Litv.) and prunoaflatunia (Prunoaflatunia V.Tkatsch.). Cattle?s driving on watershed area and top of the range is additional cause of landslide formation.
The main purpose of the project is to stop processes of desertification and landslide formation near Alcha plot through planting of wood and bush vegetation in the watershed area, including species recorded in the Red Data Book of Kyrgyzstan.
The additional goal of the project is to help in formulation of suit to Coal Company that is refusing from resoil of community lands.
In the course of project implementation it is expected obtaining of the following results:
Ecological
-reduction of desertification rate through rehabilitation of grass cover in places of plantations of wood and bush vegetation fenced in from cattle penetration;
-rehabilitation of wood and bush vegetation as a habitat of birds and rodents;

Economic
-collection of fruits of wild fruit bushes (pistachio and almond);
-regulated collection of brushwood on fenced plots, laying in of hay;
- improvement of soil fertility on fenced plots that will allow to grow agricultural crops in spaces between rows;
-development of additional kinds of activities related to growing, collection and sale of fruits of almond, pistachio, establishment of pistachio and almond nut processing unit

Social and cultural
strengthening of traditions related with plant-growing as a supplement to a traditional cattle-breeding type of natural resources management .

Political
Activity on suit formulation to Coal Company allows increasing of population?s and self governance bodies? responsibility for natural sources using.
Actions to be undertaken by Public Association ?Tursunkyibat?
1. Conducting seminars and round table.
2. Fencing the planting territory.
3. Planting saplings and seed in 20 hectares land.
4. Establishing community based nursery forest in 0,4 hectares
5. Introducing biogumus composts.
6. Publish brochures and set up board about project.
7. Distribute planting lots among the local population.
8. Information campaign
15 families of Alcha plot, several NGOs of Jalalabat oblast and journalists of local publications will be involved in project implementation. It is expected all interested party ? nature conservation organizations, coal-mines, businessmen, and ecologists - will participate in Round Table on coal dump problems.
The main project activity will take place in the vicinity of Tegene village, Aksy rayon, Jalalabat oblast, Kyrgyzstan. The plot located 40 km south of Sarychelek State Reserve.
The expected benefits of the project, including environmental and livelihood benefits
- increasing vegetation species included into Red Data Book of Kyrgyzstan
- decreasing of land degradation in natural nut forests zone that have global importance
- planting and fencing of plots will allow arising of products cost received from the same plots but exploitable as a pasture
