Promoting and empowering the locals in the production and marketing of conservation art for the SGP project No. 24 (Onshore preservation of sea turtle eggs (mainly Hawksbill) and a minimum of 20 km coastline stretch through local participation in the Persian Gulf area)

In the SGP project No. 24 to create alternative income around 30 women from Shibderaz and an additional 45 women from a nearby village Direstan were trained on qelim weaving and have since in their initial effort produced more than a hundred pieces with designs related to the project and national biodiversity. This initiative has attracted the interest of other families of the village who are now requesting for similar training and support.
They are now in need of a Community Center/Workshop to serve as a base for their work and provide marketing support, consumer surveys, purchase of raw material, more advanced training, new designs, etc. The rural areas in Qeshm are underdeveloped with low household income mainly dependent on marine resources. Most of the young girls in villages do not complete school and are literally ?kept? home until married. Therefore a Community Center/Workshop for women that would serve as a base for implementing empowerment programs such as handicraft production could have a significant social, economic and environmental output.
