The Conservation of Biodiversity by Promoting Rural Tourism in the Region of Sânpaul-Badeni, a Potential ?Natura 2000? Site.

The main activities include: the evaluation on natural values of the region, research on socio-economic relationships, creation of maps and of a monograph of the area, the provision of specific training for local stakeholders, elaboration of Management Plan for the area, provision of consultancy in terms of nature conservation for local stakeholders.

Project Characteristics and Results

Policy Impact

Designation of the Badeni Hill as protected area on local or regional (Harghita county) level.

Planning non gef grant

SOR plans to contribute to the development strategy of Homorod valley. There are many new project ideas, which could be developed with new financing opportunities.

Notable Community Participation

The local communities and schools in the region of Sânpaul, Badeni and Martinis communes actively participate at project implementation. The regional Newsletter is edited by the community members.

Policy Influence

The project influenced the planning and development of the Homorod microregion. One Decision of Local Council was issued, regarding the statute of protected area.

Replication of project activities

The project is replicable in areas similar to Homorod valley, rich in biodiversity and poor living conditions. Initiation of rural and eco-tourism is the key pillar on which this project can stand.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project promotes a sustainable economic growth of the local communities through ecotourism development and traditional agricultural methods utilization.

Project sustainability

The sustainability of the project comes from the income generated from rural tourism activities. As tourism is based on nature and cultural values, the grantee created a strong incentive for the local populations to care and protect their heritage.

Planning gef grant

The up-scaling to a medium-sized GEF grant would bring more opportunities to the region. The project could be extended to surrounding areas as well.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

Training sessions and trip are organised for/with the help of the local people, involvement of local students in the investigation of local natural values.

Capacity - Building Component

Updating the existing SOR house to the first Information Center in the region, the information center will be equipped to distribute information for visitors and locals about the region.

Project Results

- An inventory of the local flora and fauna, developed together with a detailed GIS map.
- A monographic study on Homorod valley, developed and printed in 500 copies.
- A Local policy regarding the establishment of the protected area "Birds Halt from Sanpaul, documented.
- A Mangement Plan for the sensitive areas, developed and submitted to the local authorities.
- Two training sessions on the economic values of the sensitive areas for rural tourism development, delivered.
- One training session for the development of small rural tourism business, delivered and graduated by 32 locals.
- A study tour in a region with developed rural tourism, organised.
- A three lingual mini guide for basic conversation on tourism, developed, printed and disseminated in 100 copies.
- A Tourism Information Center established and specific information materials (brochure, guides, maps) printed and distributed.
- Local rural tourism offer promoted through information panels, dedicated website, documentary movie.
- Capacity building for local community, delivered by a regional facilitator.
