Parks for Life ? A Common Goal for Communities and Environmental NGOs.

The project aims, among others, at involving local communities in designing the Management Plan for Apuseni Natural Park, promoting agri-tourism in the Northern part of Apuseni Mountains, improving waste management system in the area of the Park and at developing a pilot economic activity by using wood waste.

Project Characteristics and Results

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Educational activities will emphasize the importance of natural heritage for the global environment.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

Indigenous people have a significant participation in activities related with waste management, vision on community future and actions that should be implemented to achieve this vision.

Notable Community Participation

Local communities actively participate in developing local initiatives to be supported through our project.

Capacity - Building Component

Local inhabitants, authorities and local NGOs will achieve new skills and knowledge about working together for their communities and about their relationship with the natural resources.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

One of the activities is designed to promote best practices in rural tourism as a real alternative source of incomes for local people.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

The NGO will partner with an advertising agency to set up a small studio which will use especially waste wood to produce woodden pens and other this kind of products. The advertising agency will pay a part of the profit to the NGO that will be used to support local initiatives designed to improve the environment in the area of our project.

Project sustainability

The local Action Plans will be implemented by the communities under the coordination of the leaders trained within the project. The waste wood processing workshop will continue its activity producing benefits both in terms of reducing pollution and generating additional income. Additional financial support was attracted from Charles Mott Foundation.

Policy Influence

The project developed a Management Plan for the protected area the National Park Muntii Apuseni.

Gender Focus

The project promotes gender equity. Women are encouraged to participate in all the activities.

Project Results

- The Management Plan of the Natural Park Muntii Apuseni, developed and submitted to the Park Administration
- Two workshops for the public debate of the Management Plan, organised
- Two training sessions for local capacity building on "leadership", delivered
- Five Community Forums on the local development opportunities organised, and Local Action Plans formulated
- A training session on volunteering, project application development and implementation, delivered
- Training on agro-tourism development delivered and a Manual of best practices on agro-tourism printed and distributed
- Local agro-tourism offer promoted through a Catalog and a dedicated website.
- Information campaign on waste management, organised and waste collection facilities acquired and installed
- A Workshop to process the wood waste, established and small objects (pencils, wood rings, frames) produced and commercialized.
- An innovative financial mechanism put in place.
