Recycling of industrial withdrawal (phosphogipsum) for further land improvement of the salted lands of the Northern Kazakhstan
The long-fellow land territory of the Akmola province is 1,052 million in hectares, which is 21% of the plough lands. The most part of them is salted grounds. The yield of the salted lands is 2-3 centners per hectar of a poor quality hay. As a result of the land degradation and pastures insufficient use, valuable feed crops are lost, only the low-grade and deleterious grammas have left.
Scientific research and industrial experience proves that productivity of the salted lands can be 3-4 times increased due to melioration process implementation. The most fundamental method that could be used is phosphogipsum application.
The project aims at restoration of the salted grounds by means of phosphogipsum application. The ecologo-toxicological expertise and regulation of dozes is lead. On the grounds restored cultivation of long-term fodder grasses is planned for hay. Realization of the project will demonstrate evidently to local farmers the ways of rational land tenure.
The project demonstrates farming utilities of the region the methods of the rational and sustainable land tenure with 2-3 years of recoupment of investments.
By means of use of phosphogypsum as industrial waste product in environmentally regulated doze, efficient and rational use of each farming utility lands could be reached. It has the most actual meaning for large ?scale farms with a huge number of long-fellow lands and limited territory of the plough-lands.
The project could be duplicated in other farms of the region, as it profitable, environmentally proved and contributes to rehabilitation of the degraded lands and utilization of phosphogypsum (as industrial waste) in Stepnogorsk city.

Project Characteristics and Results
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
As a result of the project realization, 150 tons of the hay is planned to be gathered from 150 hectares of the recovered lands, which will provide 14 families of participants with the hay for one year. The real benefit for the local people is that they will be provided with free-of-charge hay within 7 years.
Policy Influence
Based on positive project result SGP tested technology was included into the list of scientific works financed from state budget. So, this work will up-scaled with state support
