Batsumber-Community Bee Keeping
Mongolia practiced bee keeping during the past socialist time. Over 10,000 colonies were kept as state farms in several places in Darkhan-Selenge region. As the country failed in the transition into a market economy, practically all the state farms were completely self-destroyed. Only a few individual families who worked for the state farms still try to continue this practice. But there are many obstacles including financial constraints and difficulties related to worsening natural conditions. The grant is given to an NGO who deals with bee keeping in Northern Mongolia in order to support Butsumber area ecosystem and livelihoods of the local community. Before the project started, there were about 60 colonies in entire Batsumber village. After 5 months of project implementation, the village has now 126 colonies. For the first year the project has assisted in constructing a winter shelter and increasing the number of colonies from 60 to 132. The project also assisted in establishing a Community Bee Keeping Information Centre in the village/sum.
