Benefits of Kharaa - Combating land degradation by creating alternative livelihoods
Due to adverse effects of climate change, many springs, small streams, natural ponds and lakes in Mongolia have been dried up over the last 15-20 years. Haraa river is one of the biggest contributors to Selenge river which supplies 60 % of Baikal lake which accounts 20 % of world?s fresh water resources. The grant is given to a local community to restore former fruit tree growing and bee keeping practices in the left bank of Haraa river near Baruunharaa village. The project has started its activity in spring of 2005 and becomes one of the most successful projects in the region. It is growing to be a model for Baruunharaa village and showcase place for Selenge province. In summer of 2005, there was a showcase for all 21 village management authorities and attended by province Governor and many high level officials from Ministry of Food and Agriculture.
