Enhancement of Water Efficiency and Improved Local Environment in al Khaldiyeh Area/ Karak Govt.

The project is part of a 3-project cluster that will be implemented by community organizations in 3 neighboring villages in Karak governorates, south of the Kingdom. The projects aims at assisting local communities in the concerned areas to adapt to impacts of climate change including draught and subsequent land degradation, through improving community management of natural resources including water and soil in a way that contributes to sustaining those resources and improves the living conditions of those local communities. Activities to be supported by the projects include water harvesting through establishment of water storage reservoirs and rain-collection cisterns in addition to soil conservation measures and income generating activities such as bee-keeping, home gardens and medicinal plants.

Project Characteristics and Results

Capacity - Building Component

A special capacity building component will be implemented through the project, involving training of CBO and community members on the various project activities, environmental issues and project administrative and financial management issues.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Environmental issues will be highlighted during awareness sessions planned for the project.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

It is hoped that the supported activities which involve improving agricultural land productivity and home gardens would improve local community income and improve their living conditions.

Notable Community Participation

The implementing society represents the local community directly. Local community were directly involved during the design and planning phase of the project. They participated in the planning sessions held to develop the project with participation of the SGP team. Community members will be the direct beneficiaries of project activities, whether in their farms or their homes.

Policy Influence

The project was created to enhance use efficiency of water resources in Al Khaldiyeh village, in order to improve the local environment and land productivity in a fragile arid to semi-arid area of the Mediterranean Ecosystem. Project Operational Objectives and Outputs: 1 Improve water use efficiency and conservation on the domestic and the agricultural land level 2 Improve and develop the local environment connecting that to the improvement of domestic economy and family nutrition 3 Enhance the level of local community awareness of water and environmental issues and promotion of their sustainable use 4 Build the capacities of the NGO and enable it to undertake its role in community development on the local level

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

The project will use a revolving fund mechanism to sustain project activities beyond funding period.

Gender Focus

There are two women on the Society's board. Women are encouraged to take part in the Society's activities through encouraging them strongly to become members of the CBO and benefit from supported activities.

Project sustainability

To insure sustainability, the small projects execution will be carried out through a soft loan programme, which will be delivered to beneficiaries under an agreement with strict financial guarantees. The Poverty Alleviation through Community Development Project (PACD) will provide technical assistance to the NGO in implementation, follow up and capacity building activities. The NGOs teams and local community members will be trained on all fields of the project intervention, namely on water collection projects, home gardens, institutional capacity building and other administrative and technical aspects.

Project Results

- After struggling with issues relating to project implementation and financial reporting, the NGO has been able, with the help of the community liaison officer and the SGP team, to hold grip of the required procedures, thereby improving its capacities in project management and making use of the exchange and transfer of experiences brought about by the assistance provided by the community liaison officer who had taken part in the management of previous SGP supported projects in the near-by village of Rakin.
- Some of the activities originally planned were replaced due to emerging needs voiced by the local community. In accordance to the modified work plan, the project has been able to support 17 goat-raising projects managed in closed barns outside the village by a specialized farmer. 5 cisterns were also supported by the project.
