Community Livelihood and Environmental Awareness Campaign in Sakhra Village- north Jordan

The project is part of a 3-project cluster that will be implemented by women cooperatives in three villages in the north of the country. The projects aim to contribute to controlling land degradation and soil erosion, improving productivity of agricultural land and preserving environmental resources.
Project activities include the introduction of soil conservation measures, water harvesting, using effective drip irrigation techniques, bee keeping, medicinal herb planting and processing and installation of solar cells for water heating. It is hoped that these projects would constitute models that encourage neighboring communities to adopt similar activities to serve their needs in line with their environmental and socio-economic contexts. The projects include an element of awareness raising for the farmers and local community members in the field of environmental issues affecting their areas and projects. They will also include an element of capacity building of implementing cooperatives, which will enable them to provide support to their local communities. The above cooperatives will use a revolving loan system in supporting their various activities so they can continue providing support to more projects that serve their local communities

Project Characteristics and Results

Capacity - Building Component

A special capacity building component will be implemented through the project, involving training of CBO and community members on the various project activities, environmental issues and project administrative and financial management issues. Several activities in this respect have already been implemented through technical assistant's involvement with the CBO.

Project sustainability

As the cooperative will be using the revolving fund approach, repayments of loans will be used to fund new activities and new Income Generating Activities (IGA?s). The applied system is guaranteeing sustainability. It is assumed that the beneficiaries will realize the positive impacts on the quality of their lives, which will encourage them to maintain the achievements of the project. It is expected that, the cooperative?s success will enable them for future funding from additional sources if necessary. Sakhra Women Cooperative will also get support from the Poverty Alleviation through Community Development (PACD) Project in the form of training in different subjects and especially in leadership management skills, financial controlling, and needed technical assistance over several years until being able to manage the cooperative fully by themselves

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Environmental issues will be highlighted during awareness sessions planned for the project.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

Planned activities at the household and community level will be supported through a revolving fund system, which would maintain project activities for as long as possible.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Planned activities which involve improving agricultural land productivity , bee keeping, home gardens and other income-generating activities would improve local community income and improve their living conditions.

Gender Focus

The cooperative is a women organization, with exclusive women membership, however, the beneficiaries will be all community members, since the families and households will benefit from the supported activities.

Notable Community Participation

The cooperative was established as a direct response to the village's needs, especially the women sector. Local community were directly involved during the design and planning phase of the project. They participated in the planning sessions held to develop the project with participation of the SGP team and the technical assistant team. Community members, will be the direct beneficiaries of project activities, whether in their farms or their homes.

Policy Influence

The project aims at contributing to the sustainable land management and improve environmental situation in Sakhra village through supporting small projects that better the community livelihood and sustainable management of land resources. The project objectives depend directly on solving the environmental problems in the area, as follows: 1. Regarding lack of awareness in environmental issues and preserving the forests - Raise awareness and knowledge of environmental issues related to preserving the land and using their resources in a sustainable way. - Create awareness among school children in environmental issues. - Create awareness among the village community about the importance of preserving the environment. 2. Regarding Shortage of water supplies - To address the issue of building new cisterns and maintaining the old ones to collect rain water 3. Regarding lack of renewable energy sources - To address the issue of improper use of energy, with the installations of solar cells, to provide heated water for home consumption 4. Regarding exhaustion of natural resources -To control land degradation and soil erosion in the area, through proper soil conservation measures 5. Regarding lack of diversified sources of income - To diversify sources of income of the local community through supporting Income-Generating Activities that include the tree nurseries, herbal plants 6. Regarding the need for capacity building of the local institution - To build the capacity of the cooperative as a civil institution and empower the women by giving them access to micro-credit and training
