A Natura 2000 Site for People and Nature at Iza?s flow in Tisza

The project aims to strengthen biodiversity conservation in the area by establishing a ?Natura 2000? site and to contribute to a sustainable rural development of the lower Iza valley region, by promoting eco and agro-tourism. The area has a high level of biodiversity, Iza being most probaly the cleanest river in the Carpathians. Besides the elaboration of Natura 2000 documentation to be submitted to the Ministry of Environment, the organization will work closely with the local communities to develop The Participatory Strategic Plan for the Sustainable Rural Development. Based on this, the first ecotourism and agrotourism initiatives will begin. This way new directions for biodiversity conservation and sustainable development will be demonstrated.

Project Characteristics and Results

Project sustainability

- The local authorities will support and monitor the implementation of the Strategic Plan - The trained persons on agro-tourism services will develop their own business (5 olready started during the project duration) - The already established partnership between Valea Verde and the local community will continue by the preparation and submission of applications for local development projects financing.(one already submitted, other two under preparation)

Notable Community Participation

Besides the direct participation of the community members to different activities, a Community Working Group was established to represent the community's interests.

Capacity - Building Component

During the implementation of this project, "Green Valley" Association, the grantee, concluded partnerships with the Museum of Maramures from Sighetu Marmatiei, Sighetu Marmatiei City Hall and asked for the expertise of resource-persons. By creating the partnership environment, the capacity of local organizations to cooperate and implement projects with regional impact was enhanced.

Policy Impact

During the project implementation a Strategic Plan for the Sustainable Rural Development of the rural area situated around Sighetu Marmatiei municipality was elaborated by involving all the interest factors. This initiative represents a good practice example to substantiate and influence the policies at the local level.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Lately, in the project area - as in almost all parts of the world-, there is an increased pressure on natural resources. Most of the presures are related to unsustainable use of forest resources, illegal dumping of the waste wood, drying the wetlands to increase the arable land, use of unsustaible agricultural practices. The implemented activities were also a step in raising the awareness among local populations related to the global environmental problems.

Policy Influence

The project documented the policy regarding the establishment of Natura 2000 site and also developed a Strategic Plan for Rural Sustainable Development , endorsed by the local authorities.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

The project target group is represented by the rural populations around Sighetu Marmatiei municipality, amounting more than 5 500 inhabitants.

- An inventory of the local biodiversity, developed.
- A Local Action Group for the development of the Strategic Plan for Rural Sustainable Development, established (including 35 members)
- A Strategic Plan for Rural Sustainable Development, formulated and adopted by the local authorities
- Two standards documentations for Natura 2000 sites prepared, submitted and approved.
- Two training sessions on the Development of a tourism business - Best practices in agro-tourism, delivered to 43 locals.
- Two campaigns for project promotion and results dissemination organised
- Promotion materials designed, printed and distributed in 7000 copies (leaflets, brochures, posters )
