ECONET

The project aims to secure a sustainable development of the Bistrita Valley through non-biodegradable waste management, complemented by practical activities designed to protect the ecosystems within this micro-region. Main activities consist of: pilot business plan for tourist pension owners, selective waste collection and compacting of non-biodegradable waste from pensions; involvement of pension owners in reestablishing the integrity of several forest and aquatic ecosystems damaged by non-biodegradable waste deposits in the Bistrita River basin; promotion of ecotourism attractions of the region, i.e. ecotourism routes in the Calimani National Park area, information package.

Project Characteristics and Results

Notable Community Participation

The communities from the Tara Dornelor micro-region and from the Bistrita River valley (over 7000 inhabitants) are involved in project activities (information campaign, trainings, practical activities for forest and aquatic ecosystem restoration, selective waste collection and recycling etc.)

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The eco-tourism will be promoted as an alternative income generation activity. The selective waste collection and valorisation of the plastic wastes will also contribute to the increase in local community income.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The information campaigns will raise the public awareness on the importance of biodiversity conservation and on the local actions the community can undertake to this effect.

Capacity - Building Component

The project activities (trainings, information materials, good practices guide) will contribute to the capacity building of the local community regarding the development of an eco-tourism business and sustainable waste management.

Policy Influence

The project documented the Decisions of the Local Council Panaci and Local Council Vatra Dornei regarding the selective waste collection and the establishment of ecological landfills.

Policy Impact

The project intends to influence the local policy regarding the waste management in important forest and aquatic ecosystems area.

Gender Focus

The projects encourages the women involvement in all its phases, especially in the activities regarding the eco-tourism services.

Project sustainability

The trained persons on eco-tourism services will continue to provide high quality services. The new hosting structures are under certification process and will become tour operators, contributing to the increase of local income. The local public authorities will continue to implement the selective waste collection (a contract with specialised operators in plastic waste recycling was signed). The local NGOs involved in project implementation will support local activities of ecosystems restoration.

Project Results

- A mobile plastic press and 28 selective waste collection facilities, acquired and installed.
- Temporary storage platform for plastic waste, built.
- A promotion campaign for sellective waste collection sustained and 2000 promotion materials (leaflets, posters, banners, stickers) printed and distributed.
- A training session on eco-tourism, delivered and 17 persons certified as tourism guides
- A model Business Plan and a Manual for good practices in tourism developed and disseminated.
- Two local policies on waste management documented.
- Four camps for the restoration of the forest and aquatic ecosystems affected by the uncontrolled non-degradable waste deposit, organised
- A package of local eco-tourism services developed and promoted through specific materials (brochures, post cards, Photo Album) and dedicated web-site.
