Model Ecosystem Management involving community in action ( MESMICA)
Tirupathi is a temple town in the state of Andhra Pradesh. On an average, it has a floating population of 60,000 pilgrims from all parts of India and the world. The present scenario in Tirupathi town is to get rid of wastes from sight by introducing unscientific practices. This is leading to degradation of land and contamination of ground water in the whole district and adjoining areas. This project envisages the involvement of local community in managing local environment in a sustainable manner. The rationale of the project is to make the temple city and its environment clean, to make use of biodegradable wastes for organic manure facilitating land development and to control other areas responsible for global climatic changes and instability to the fragile earth environment and facilitate the citizens to have ?Safe Environmental Practices.

Capacity - Building Component
A paperbag-manufacturing unit was established in TPPM School. The municipality allocated the land. Training was imparted to members of resident associations. The municipality itself procured basic raw material. Door-to-door waste collection started from the month of December. In all, the project has been implemented through local community. Self Help Group Women will be formed under the project to grade up the product to attract good market and ensure livelihoods. Also rag pickers and waste retrievers require more training and motivation for behavioral changes to concentrate more in source separation etc. and better solid waste management.
