Rehabilitation of Tsunami affected families through strengthening livestock based resource management in Nagapattinam district
Rehabilitation of Tsunami affected families through strengthening livestock based resource management in Nagapattinam district
Post Tsunami, the coastal villages incurred huge loss in terms of property, livelihood and livestock. In addition, agricultural land was deposited with silt from the sea, which resulted in salinity of soil as well as ponds and wells. This led to failure of agriculture as well as death of livestock. The organization decided to intervene in these areas and strive to provide the sustainable sources of livelihood to tsunami affected families by introducing income generating activities based on livestock keeping. The aim is to conserve native animal species, land and water resources, and promote animal husbandry based sustainable farming system. Coordination will be established with various NGOs and Government Organizations/Institutes involved in post tsunami rehabilitation programme so as to avoid overlapping of work and thereby improve in efficiency and effectiveness of the envisaged programme. The entire programme will be implemented through community participation and contributions in all stages of project planning and implementation. The basic objective of the project is to rehabilitate tsunami affected families through promoting local native species based animal husbandry based sustainable farming systems.

Project Characteristics and Results
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
A programme for promotion of animal husbandry was done for 200 families by including native animal species in the income generation activities. Local buffalo breeds were distributed to the tsunami affected villages. Local breeds of goats are also being distributed. This is being done as the local breeds are known to sustain harsh saline conditions. Various activities will be carried out to generate man-days for the community. 1000 men and women are being given employment opportunities by engaging them in drainage of saline water from 10 seawater-filled ponds by cleaning the supply channels and reclamation of saline land by laying of 50 demonstration plots by raising green manures, manuring of land by cattle penning, preparation of organic pesticides and fertilizers, introducing salt tolerating species, raising fodder and promotion of hedge plants and trees. Fodder cultivation facilities will be provided in 5 acres of community land to meet fodder requirements of livestock. For irrigation, two bore wells of 200 ft depth will be dug and fencing arrangements will be erected.
Gender Focus
Eighty women belonging to lower castes and engaged as agricultural laborers who lost their houses have been organized into Self Help Groups. These SHGs have been promoted for mobilizing savings and create their own funds for credit and goats will be distributed to them to initiate income generation.
