Community Based Conservation on Lake Thowet, Lake Seperang and Lake Palgading, Gunungkidul District, Yogyakarta
Project development Goal:
To develop lake conservation based on community participation through building the capacity of community organizations, soil and environment conservation, economic development and community awareness in 3 (three) of lake supporting communities at limestone area in Gunungkidul District.

Project Objectives :
1. To build and develop 3 community organizations? capacity to enable them to develop program plan and management on local lake conservation
2. To extend advocacy and discourse on community based lake conservation and build the network of community-care for lakes
3. To increase community participation developing awareness to give more attention on lake conservation
4. To develop water-catchment area in proposed sites with nursery and growing site-specific and other productive plants.
5. To increase community awareness to reduce non-organic fertilizer and develop skills to make organic fertilizer
6. To increase community?s income through developing livestock which will contribute to conservation by using organic fertilizer from its waste
7. To minimize level of sedimentation comes from land-slide in the lakes and to reduce level of lake?s bottom linking of water that will lower lake?s surface with cascading system and artificial barrier of land around the lakes.

Expected output :
1. Establishment of three community organizations
2. Films, posters and sign boards about lake conservation
3. Developed 8 permanent trashes on Thowet lakeside
4. Growth of 9500 trees around the lakes
5. Developed water catchment area around the sites
6. Conducted capacity building training on organization and conservation management, participated by 15 persons from community organizations of purposed sites
7. Conducted skill training on livestock, organic fertilizer, participated by 75 persons from community organizations of purposed sites
8. Revolving fund for community on livestock started with 2 cows and 40 goats
9. Establishment of 6 sample sites of organic fertilizer production, each site has 2 samples.
10. Developed cascading-system of land and artificial barrier around the lakes.

Activities to be conducted :
A. Strengthening local institutions:
1. Establish 3 community organizations
2. Conduct capacity building training on organization and conservation management, participated by 15 persons from community organizations of purposed sites
3. Conduct skill trainings on livestock and organic fertilizer, participated by 75 persons from community organizations of purposed sites
4. Practice to produce organic fertilizer by making sample on particular sites
B. Awareness on Community based Lake Conservation :
1. Village meetings
2. Produce awareness tools: films, posters, sign boards
3. Film presentations
4. Carry out traditional ceremonial to express community?s gratitude of lakes existence
5. Build the permanent trash around the lake Thowet
C. Implementation of lake conservation :
1. Plant various site-specific trees on the lakes? sides for water catchment area
2. Build cascading land and artificial fence around the lakes to prevent land-slide
3. Plant particular plants for livestock food supply
D. Increasing community economic welfare
1. Renovation of existing cow and goat stalls
2. Revolving fund for community through purchasing of cows and goats managed by community organizations
E. Advocacy and Networking
1. Build the network on community based lake conservation
2. Hearing with Local Government and Parliament
3. Publish 8 editions of bulletin and distribute them
F. Monitoring and evaluation:
1. Monitoring
2. Evaluation : mid and final evaluation
G. Report writing

Project Participants and/or beneficiaries :
1. Community of Blimbing hamlet, Girisekar village (250 households)
2. Community of Widoro and Karangnongko hamlet, Giripurwo village (150 households)
3. Community of Tlagawarak hamlet, Giripurwo village (130 households)

The project is managed by a 7-person team of NAWAKAMAL led by Al. Agung Haryanto, its Director. The project will ensure women?s participation in both project management and fieldwork. NAWAKAMAL and the people of each site will jointly own the project. The mutual ownership includes the decision-making process, financing the project and associated risks, data and information generated by the project, and financial benefit from the business activities generated by the project.

Policy Influence
The community suceeded to organize meeting and stakeholder discussions with the local parliament and government executing agencies. Later, the government also work in cooperation with Nawakamal to proceed with the program implementation.
