Management of Waste Water in El Qarawi Village, El Behira

El Qarawi is one of the satellite villages around Abou Homos, in Behira govenorate. The village is deprived of any sanitation services and a large part of the waste water was being disposed of in the fresh water canal causing contamination. This canal feeds into the river Nile. El Sanaa Association, one of the active NGOs in the area, implemented a project to establish a waste water treatment facility for the village. The original plan was to restrict the waste water facility to grey water but eventually the community members opted to establish a treatment unit for municipal and grey water.

Project Characteristics and Results

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

- 4 seminars were held to raise the awareness of the community to the dangers of water pollution, the impact of throwing wastes on water bodies and the importance of proper management of water

- Awareness raising of the community to the importance of proper water management - Improvement in the health conditions of the community

Notable Community Participation

- Community members participated in 6 seminars aimed at raising the levels of environmental awareness, and explaining the project's objectives, stages and activities - Field visits to women were conducted in order to explain the concept behind the project and its impact on their lives - Community participants were encouraged to discuss the stages of the project and make suggestions regarding the location of the filtration systems. They also elected a number of men from among them to be trainees for the project

Capacity - Building Component

- Training of 10 young men from the village on the maintenance of the pipes and the filtration system

Cleaner water means improved health conditions for the whole community

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

Co-financing was provided through a grant of 75,000$ from a business man. This enabled the organization to extend the pipelines to cover larger areas of the village

Replication of project activities

Four other villages in the area were nominated for the implementation of this project. 30% of the inhabitants will cover the costs, while the remaining 70% will be funded by the governorate's budget

Project sustainability

The organization will collect a monthly fee of 3 LE monthly from each participating family. This will be placed in an account that will be used to cover the costs of maintenance. A committee will be formed to oversee this process

Gender Focus

The project focused particularly on raising the awareness of women regarding the importance of healthy hygiene habits and the dangers of waste water disposal in the fresh water canal of Qarawi

Project Results

- A tangible output was the construction of a waste water treatment system to which houses in the village can be connected
- Provision of a simple model of economic and safe disposal of waste water that could be easily replicated in other similar villages
- Prevention of waste water contaminating the fresh water of El Qarawi fresh water canal which feeds into the Nile river
- Raising the environmental awareness of the community to the hazards of improper waste water disposal methods and sensitizing women to proper water management (for example illustrating the importance of using clean water instead of water streams for the washing of clothes and utensils)
- Decreasing the levels of pollution in El Qarawi lake
- Enhancing the skills of village members participating in the project by providing them with the training on how to construct and maintain waste water treatment units
