Raising Youth Environmental Awareness through Art Means
Raising Youth Environmental Awareness through Art Means
Environmental issues are not integrated in curricula of secondary schools, and attract quite a little attention there. Therefore it is crucial to promote sustainable development ideas, to raise level of environmental awareness, as well as to develop holistic approach of schoolchildren by using not traditional and attractive.

The aim of the project is to raise environmental awareness (especially in SGP focal areas) of school children by using artistic means, and to encourage them to participate in solution of environmental problems in their communities. Theater, movie, painting and social role-plays are perceived as an interactive method to speak up global environmental problems in understandable and creative way.

After the competition about 25 schoolchildren and 12 teachers from 12 schools from all over the Lithuania will be invited to the camp during autumn holidays in 2005. Three environmental experts on biodiversity, water protection and climate change will provide training for participants of the camp. The painting and filmmaking experts as well as psychologist will be working to put the best results of the camp. Based on information received short environmental movies will be created, poster will be drawn and scenarios of public environmental actions-performances for the schools and local communities will be created. After the camp schoolchildren will share their experience with their colleagues, and will organize at least 3 environmental public performances in each school (one performance ? on the Earth day). Posters will be distributed to schools and other interested organizations.

The second camp for 35 teachers of different subjects will be organized in January 2006. This camp will aim to share experience and ideas how better to integrate environmental education to curricula of secondary schools. The teachers will get training on environmental issues; the results and experience from schoolchildren camps will be discussed. The participants of the camp will receive training certificate form the Teacher Professional Development Center, so the event will be officially recognized as a development of teachers? qualification.
