Restoration of Degraded Areas and their Adaptation for the Protection of Species and Habitats in Zemaitija National Park
Unsustainable human activities during the Soviet period, as well as decreased moving of bogs and meadows during the last decades cause deterioration of many valuable biotops in Zemaitija National Park. It results in decrease of various species living in the area of Zemaitija National Park. For example, Black Grouse used to breed in different parts of National Park ten years ago, however there are only a few individuals left now. Urgent measures need to be taken to restore and improve habitats in these neglected areas.
The project aims to protect, restore and improve habitats of animal species of European importance (Botrychium matricariifolium, B.simplex, Liparis loeselii, Lycaena dispar, Bufo calamita, Rana lessonae, Tetrao tetrix, Bonasia bonasia) so that their populations would reach stability in neglected and degraded areas of Zemaitija National Park.
During the project the scrubs will be cut, and 10 ha of protected swamps and meadows will be moved. 10 artificial nests for Black Storks (3 units), Spotted Eagle (3 units), White-tiled Eagle (1 unit) and Honey Buzzard (1 unit) will be erected. Tower for bird watching will be constructed in Pakastuva bog reserve. 8 feeding places will be constructed and 8 boxes with sand and gravel (needed for digestion) will be created for Hazel Hen and Black Grouse. 3 perches for predatory birds will be constructed also. The amount of predator animals like a Mink, Marten will be regulated by the live-traps (10 unit). Five different types (20 units) of amphibians? shelters will be constructed. The publication will be issued, as well as five information stands will be placed in each site. A number of seminars for farmers on application of agro-environmental measures will be organized.
People from Visvainiai, Sarnele and Zemaiciu Kalvarija towns will be involved in implementation of the project (will cut scrubs, make hay). Cognitive facilities made during the project will attract more people, therefore better conditions to provide tourism services and thus to have additional income will be created.
