Project Characteristics and Results
Capacity - Building Component
By visiting the ECO-C, the local community can learn about different technologies and concepts, such as the Otjitoilet, home garden, and home improvement techniques. The marketing, orientation and visibility of the centre attracts visitors.
The participants of workshops benefited by gaining practical knowledge which may be applied daily to improve living conditions. In addition, some trainees are now keen to set up their own eco-business through the support of the ECO-C.
The ECO-C staff (Field Officer and Caretaker) have benefited through employment and experience. The Caretaker lives at the centre, and uses the resources.
Notable Community Participation
Grade 6, 7, and 8 students and staff from KJ Kapeua School used elements of the project to complement related school curriculum. Thus, there is a strong partnership developing between the project and the school.
All contractors hired to implement the project were local. Local builders erected the fence around the ECO-C perimeter, built foundations for the sewage and water tank, and cleared the yard. For each of the demonstration projects (i.e. Otji toilet, Metal Shack) small working groups were formed for construction.
