Living Landscapes: Conserving Wildlife as Part of Sustainable Forest Management
Living Landscapes: Conserving Wildlife as Part of Sustainable Forest Management
Sarawaks protected area system is not large enough to protect all the migratory wildlife such as the bearded pigs. These animals are very important sources of protein to local communitiies and also contribute to the health of the forest as they are major browsers and seed dispersers. They are also found in the Ulu Baram especially in the permanent forest Estate,(PFE) where the main activity is logging. To access the timber, access roads have to be built. However increased access of roads in these forest also leads to serious over hunting and depletion of wildlife numbers by hunters and poaschers from towns.to prevent the loss of wildlife from these remote areas, commercial wildlife trade is banned. To increase the protection of wildlife in logging concessions employees of the timber companies are not to hunt in the licensed areas while they are in the employ of a company. company vehicles are also not to be used for hunting, carrying and selling of wild animals.

The main aim of this prooject is to
- implement the recommendations of " A master plan for Wildlife in Sarawak"
- To implement the Wildlife Protection OOrdinance
- To identify alternate sources of revenue not derived from wildlife in full consultation and cooperation with local communities and
- to examine the effects of implementing the rocommendations on wildlife conservation and ecosystem health as compared to logged over areas without implementation of the above.
