Community participation in sustainable natural resources management, environmental protection and improvement of livelihoods in Malengane-Sábie-Moamba, in Maputo province, through the promotion of environmental education and plantation for reforestation and community sustenance as alternative forms to the illegal hunt, bushfire and forest encroachment for charcoal production
This project will promote environmental education and awareness, and control the current levels of biodiversity loss due to bushfires, illegal offtake of animals, forest encroachment, harvest of firewood, production of charcoal, and poor farming practices along Incomati river. Alternatively the project will organize the local community association of Malengane in management committees, that will undertake activities like bee-keeping, cassava and sweet potatoes cultivation among other crops. A tree nursery of fruit trees, native and exotic trees will be an setup to undertake reforestation activities and income generation. Water pumps will be provided to collect water from Incomati river to the village using galloons and chariots as means to provide water to households and livestock drinking. From these activities marketing of local products, as a source of income will be promoted at household level. This will be part of the project sustainability approach. Capacity building of the villagers on forest conservation, watershed management and marketing techniques are part of the project goals
