Community Based Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Natural Resource Use and Management in Kiau Nuluh

A community based project that investigates and resolves the issues of conserving natural resources , especially forests, that establishes an effective system of sustainable natural resource use and management. The absence of a sustainable forest management strategy may eventually deprive the local Dusun community of communal access to the natural resources found therein.The project aims to establish a community forest reserve in Kiau as a community natural resource base that is recognised by the government, build and strengthen the knowledge and capacity of the local community about biodiversity conservation, natural resource management and sustainable use, formulate strategies for additional income generation from these community natural resource bases, particularly for subsistence needs (fuelwood, medicinal plants, food), attracting scientific research, tourism and recreation. The project also aims to establish cooperation among the local community, government agencies and non-governemental organisations, and the network of other villages in pursuing biodiversity conservation and sustainable natural resource use and management. It would also raise the awareness of the local community about the importance of biodiversity conservation.

Project Characteristics and Results

Capacity - Building Component

An important component of this project is building the capacity of the local indigenous community to be aware of the importance of maintaining a balanced ecosystem and to be able to safeguard their natural resources through sustainable use and management, especially at water catchments.

Notable Community Participation

The local community from the villages of Kg Kiau Nuluh and Kiau Bersatu consist mainly of hill paddy farmers and rely largely on agriculture and forest resources for their subsistence, raised concern when the natural resources in their surrounding area were threatened. Thus a community-based system of natural resource management is required to safeguard the long-term sustainability of local livelihoods and conservation of the environment.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

The people of Kiau Nuluh an Kiau Bersatu are Dusuns, who are the indigenous inhabitants of this area and have been historically recognised as the gatekeepers to the summit of Mount Kinabalu, as the communal land is bordering on Kinabalu Park.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

This community-based project is aimed at investigating and resolving the issues of conserving natural resources, especially the forests which is a main source of their livelihhoods. The local community at Kiau are calling for these forested areas to be kept as a village forest reserve for communal use through the establishment of an effective system for sustainable use and management of natural resources.

Project Results

Activities:
Assessment and Mapping of the area - identify, measure and demarcate the boundaries, collect topographic data on the project areas and to produce topographic and zoning map of project areas. Setting up of basic infrastructure such as establishing trails to the project site and potential tourism attractions, building bridges, resting huts and camping sites.

Biodiversity conservation and sustainable natural resource use and management through various components;
Research - compile inventories and databases on species and uses of flora and fauna found at project site, conduct socio-economic study on traditional knowledge of natural resources and collaboration with Sabah Parks in conducting research and inventories.
Identify water catchment areas and rehabilitation of degraded catchment areas through reforestation.
Conservation - building the capacity of the community on natural resource use and management protocols to safeguard the ecosystems through dialogues and workshops.
Develop a sustainable tourism-based economy through homestays programmes and other tourism options as an alternative livelihood.
Land status - hold dialogues with government agencies to clarify land status.
Outreach and awareness raising through promotional and printed material and education via extra-curricular activities in schools, providing reference materials and publications on biodiversity conservation and sustainable use of natural resources in the community library and conducting educational workshops.
Collaborative networks with NGOs, CBOs, Government agencies and other community networks to build partnerships and exchanges on best practises.
