This project undertaken by the NGO, Sahabat Alam Malaysia entitled, ?Community Support and Action for Environmental and Biodiversity Protection? was to mobilize, empower and strengthen environmental awareness and action among local communities in Peninsular Malaysia, especially in the rural areas so as to ensure the protection of its biodiversity.
As a follow-on from an earlier project funded by the Danish International Assistance Agency (DANIDA) to conduct training workshops and roadshows, 5 environmental resource centers and action groups known as ?Friends of the Environment Movement?(referred to locally as ?Angkatan Sahabat Alam Sekitar? {ASAS}) were established in 4 states, namely Kedah, Penang, Perak and Pahang, and comprised of leaders from rural communities, farmers, fisherfolk, labourers, indigenous people, teachers, women and youth, who aimed to mobilize their communities to protect and improve the natural environment and biodiversity by taking action on environmental problems arising in their communities.

Project Characteristics and Results
Gender Focus
All of the projects's activities will include the active participation of women throughout its duration, from planning, to dialogues and trainings/workshops. This is especially so in 2 of the centres where there is increased prominence and participation by local womenfolk on environmental matters that would involve their sustainable livelihoods.
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
As development and urbanization rapidly reaches the rural areas, the issue of sustainable livelihood becomes a concern for many rural local communities, who rely on natural resources and its surroudings as a source of income, ie. inshore fishermen, farmers, and more so, the indigenous people. Empowerment of these communities would help them protect their environment and its biodiversity for their sustainable livelihoods.
