Consolidation of the existing wind powered irrigation scheme, Bwanza Village Council, Bunda

Many years of studies and trials have proved that solution to chronic problems of food shortage and hunger lies in small-scale community based irrigation schemes. Priority is given to those that use renewable energy technologies. It is in view of the attributes of small scale solar or wind powered irrigation schemes that the GEF Small Grants Programme intends to support establishment of demonstration projects. Its main objective is to promote wide use of solar energy in irrigation farming through support to a demonstration community based irrigation scheme.

Planning non gef grant

The Ministry of Afgriculture as part of the Government of Tanzania is studying the systems keenly with teh view of upscaling the experience.

Replication of project activities

The project has been replicated by the Government in Mwanza whereby they intend to support similar projects in other parts of Mwanza region. The Mennonite church in Musoma has replicated the technology whereby they use wind mill to pump water to its hospital in Shirati.

Linkages gef projects

This project may link with Climate change adaptation , whereby drought as a result of climate change may be overcomed by irrigation.

Project sustainability

Water pumping is critical for livelihood. Project has water fund, which promotes sustainability of project activities.
