Bukima Wind Powered Irrigation Project

Many years of studies and trials have proved that solution to chronic problems of food shortage and hunger lies in small-scale community based irrigation schemes. Priority is given to those that use renewable energy technologies. It is in view of the attributes of small scale solar or wind powered irrigation schemes that the GEF Small Grants Programme has supported establishment of wind energy for water pumping and small scale irrigation.

Notable Community Participation

60% of the work will be done by local communities. Work will involve digging of pipelines, collection of building materials for construction of water tank; procurement of project tool and materials.

Gender Focus

Food crop production in Africa is primarily the work of women. The project will reduce women's workload in this regard

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Increased crop production through low cost wind powered irrigation system is expected to increase household food security and incomes. These results will improve livelihood of farmers.

Capacity - Building Component

Local communities will be trained on how to operate and maintain wind powered irrigation system for increased crop production
