Conservation and development of Agricultural biodiversity; Developing a tank cascade in the dry land areas of semi arid Karnataka
Development of Humane Action (DHAN) Foundation is a professional development organization working in field of livelihoods and development, promoting institutions to reach scale and human resource development. The goal of the project is conservation and development of water and agricultural ecosystems in the selected villages of Nassandra watershed located in Magadi block of Bangalore Rural District. The area is mainly dependent on monsoon receiving less than 40 days of rain in a year. The six tanks present in the area are deteriorating due to negligence. Overgrazing and overexploitation has threatened rainwater harvesting and conservation resulting in a serious threat to the biodiversity. Gender Focus
6 women SHGs will be formed which will have corpus and micro-finance activity to run their association. These groups will be instrumental in community mobilization and project implementation.
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
Project aims to contribute to sustainable development in the area by enhancing agricultural production and local environmental security through conservation and development of agriculture and wetland ecosystems. Agriculture will become a sustainable and rewarding occupation in the 450 ha of lands served by tanks. The yields from tank-irrigated wetlands will raise up to 30 % from the present levels in the 185.5 ha tank fed area.
