Kirumba Solar Powered Small Scale Irrigation Project

Many years of studies and trials have proved that solution to chronic problems of food shortage and hunger lies in small-scale community based irrigation schemes. Priority is given to those that use renewable energy technologies. It is in view of the attributes of small scale solar or wind powered irrigation schemes that the GEF Small Grants Programme intends to support establishment of demonstration projects. Its main objective is to promote wide use of solar energy in irrigation farming through support to a demonstration community based irrigation scheme.

Project Characteristics and Results

Notable Community Participation

60% of the work will be done by the local communities. Work will involve digging of pipelines, collection of building materials for construction of water tank; procurement of project tools and materials.

Project sustainability

Farmers training on the project running is expected to ensure sustainability of the project. The source of power (solar power) is abundant.

Gender Focus

Food crop production in Africa is primarily the work of women. The project will reduce women's workload in this regard.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Increased crop production through low cost solar powered irrigation system is expected to increase household food security and incomes. These results will improve livelihood of farmers.

Capacity - Building Component

Local communities will be trained on how to operate and maintain solar powered irrigation system for increased crop production

Policy Influence

Policy feedback provided on the effectiveness of solar power for productive use in rural off grid locations.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Project expected to promote public awareness of Global environment through reduction of greehouse gas emissions by adopting to solar instead of diesel powered water pumping systems.

Replication of project activities

The government in Mwanza is replicating the project experinces to support similar projects in other parts of the region. Mennonite church in Musoma has adopted the experience an dis using wind energy to pump water to its hospital in Shirati.

Policy Impact

The project is expected to provide policy feedback on the effectiveness of small scale irrigation systems in improving livelihoods systems in improving livelihoods as provided for by the agricultural policy.

- High value crops such as vegetables would promote household incomes

- Increased food crop production and incomes will address food and income poverty respectively

- Use of solar technology instead of diesel powered technology for water pumping is expected to increase public awareness of greehouse gas emmissions.
