Strengthening the process of Networking & Federation Bldg
In the project areas, there was a 'high pressure' on timber and fuelwood extraction for feeding sawmills, paddy parboiling units and bullock cart manufacturing units in the nearby small towns. In villages close to the coast, degradation of forests was higher. As a result, there are only a few patches of forests left and many 'bald hills'. The aim of this project, therefore, was to capacitate the inhabitants of the project areas to manage the forests they live in and subsist on, by themselves.
The project was proposed to form cluster and block level forums of Forest Protection Committees (FPCs); to create linkages among FPCs and the forums to enhance cross learning. It also proposed to increase the awareness and understandings of federation members on issues related to community forest management and develop institutional mechanisms capable of conflict resolution at community level. The project further aimed to strengthen sustainable forest protection and bio-diversity conservation

Project Characteristics and Results
Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
A study was done on the effects of a cyclone on vegetation loss and relief work was carried out. An assessment of vegetation loss thereby was also made and documented. A preliminary study on bamboos was done to understand the basic problems related to the livelihoods of bamboo weavers through which changes over the years were traced. A newsletter in community initiatives in forest management, in Oriya was published and distributed.
Notable Community Participation
Cluster level workshops on issues and opportunities in forest management were held and sub-committees, one each responsible for resolving conflicts, handling financial matters, information dissemination, cluster strengthening and a sub-group for women were formed. A Parishad with few active people and some members of the NGO was formed which would articulate its views, create a lobby among people, government officials and political parties. Padyatras, newsletters, collaboration with other NGOs and GOs, awareness programmes for children, issue-based campaigns, skill development programmes, training on leadership, Panchayati Raj policies and forest policies, and issue-based studies were the other methods used for understanding the lifestyles, networking and developing skills of the people living in the project areas.
