Protection of Environment by Women Initiatives

The goal of the project was to involve the local people, especially women to protect the degrading eco-system through generating awareness about the renewable energy devices viz. biogas, smokeless chullah, and introducing the community to activities like organic compost, plantation of fuel wood, organise thrift and credit groups for the self employment opportunity to make the community self-reliant and self-sufficient.

Project Characteristics and Results

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Awareness generating programmes were organized which had a good impact on the local community on promoting and protecting the environment. Literature (local language) was developed on the protection of environment. This raised better awareness in the project areas on the farmer?s participation and women?s access to resources and taking decisions.

Capacity - Building Component

Capacity building of women and other community members were done through trainings and workshops on alternate energy devices. Awareness was also generated on the reasons to adopt such devices for environmetal safety and conservatrion of fuel wood.

Policy Impact

Good linkages have been established with local-area based Govt. Agencies to mobilize support from Govt. sources, under various schemes. The project enacted as a catalyst between the people and government.

Gender Focus

The formation of SHGs increased the collective bargaining capacity of the women. The concept of women SHG?s and group savings helped to access additional resources. 3 Self Help Groups have been promoted with 30 members each. Regular thrift and credit was done in the groups. The total amount mobilized reached Rs 10,500 through monthly saving of Rs 50 by every member. The beneficiaries not only got freedom from exorbitant rate of interest of local moneylenders and vicious circle of indebtedness but also gained self-confidence and self reliance by managing their groups.

Notable Community Participation

The project adopted a community participatory approach in planning and implementation. A project implementation and management committee was formed with representatives from the community and project staff. Women were mobilized into Self Help Groups and thrift and credit systems were initiated. The project led to control deforestation and felling of trees. School students and beneficiaries planted 10,650 plants.

Project Results

The project was completed successfully and 600 smokeless chullas and 40 Bio gas plants were installed in the villages Ballav, Bainsin, Ambabahali, which had benefited the community. Many drudgery-reducing techniques were also introduced e.g. smokeless chullas, biogas plants and Ball-beasings in the hand-driven flour mills. The project led to control deforestation and felling of trees. School students and beneficiaries planted 10,650 plants. Skill and knowledge on management and mobilization of government support have been developed.

Good linkages have been established with local-area based Govt agencies to mobilize support from Govt. sources, under various schemes. The project enacted as a catalyst between the people and government and built mutual rapport and trust for more shared approach. Apart from economic independence and environmental protection from pollution, this project also provided social benefits to local people like better quality of life leading to better health and hygienic conditions.
