Consolidation of Nyabange Wind Powered Irrigation Project, Musoma

Its main objective is to consolidate promotion of wide use of wind energy in irrigation farming through support to a demonstration community based irrigation scheme. (See TAN/01/08)

In general primary project objective is to consolidate and expand the lake irrigation project with the view to demonstrating convincingly the feasibility of using renewable energy technologies for increased food production through irrigationfarming for hunger-prone lake Victoria adjacent villages.

Project Characteristics and Results

Planning non gef grant

- The Ministry of Agriculture is studying th esystems keenly with the view to upscaling the experience.

Replication of project activities

-The Government of Tanzania in Mwanza Region is replicating thise experiences to support similar projects in other parts of the region. - Mennonite church in Musoma has adopted the experience and is using wind energy to pump water to its hospital in Shirati.

Project sustainability

-The trained farmers and district technicians will ensure sustainability of the project activities. -Farmers on the other hand who have benefited from the project will also want to see the activties continuig hence project sustainability.

Notable Community Participation

All project work is done by communities. SGP grant procures tools,materials and skilled labour.

Gender Focus

Food crop production in Africa is primarily the work of women. The project will reduce women's workload in this regard.

Increased crop production through low cost wind powered irrigation system and also improves livelihood on sustainable basis.

Linkages gef projects

It links with the GEF focal areas of Climate change adaptation whereby the project will reduce the effects of drought.

Capacity - Building Component

Local communities will be trained on how to operate and install wind powered irrigation system for increased crop production.

Project sought and succeeded to demonstrate that small scale irrigation schemes, which use renewable energy technologies were effective in increasing food production as per agricultural policy

Project Results

(1) Project has more thatn doubled crop production due to irrigation

(2) Project has provided training in profitable operation and maintenance of wind powered irrigation system

(3) Project has demonstrated how small local action can generate global environmental impact

(4) Project has increased knowledge and understanding on global environment.

(5) Project has helped to reduce pollution from Lake VIctoria waters by establishing water drawing points and cattle drinking troughs away from the Lake Surface.
