Networking on indigenous knowledge through literature development and local libraries on the land and water resource management for Qeshm Island, Persian Gulf

The project involves the two communities of Laft and Sarig-e-Dulab Villages in Qeshm Island to promote the local knowledge on land ?and water resource management which is unfortunately being forgotten in the passage of time and modernization.?The project activities include:?
?1-Participatory inventories and community use of marine and coastal bio-diversity
?2-Documenting local knowledge on the traditions of using the natural land and water resources in form of folklore as easy reading ?material/books for youth and the elderly of the island
?3-Revitalizing the usage of local libraries as local networks
?4-The project will also produce a booklet on the lessons learned of the project and a film on the process of the project
?Progress to date?
Upon an appraisal of the local libraries in the villages of Qeshm Island, 5 villages have been selected to be equipped with ?environmental books which are in the process of being procured. The project team is now gathering data with the close cooperation of ?locals from the coastal communities of Qeshm Island (expert masons, dhow builders, fishermen and sailors, designers and etc.) to ?develop reading material for youth and the elderly on the following topics:

?3.? Poetry on the environment of Qeshm
?4.? Games of the children of Qeshm
?5.? Vertebrates of Qeshm

?8.? Traditional architecture of Qeshm
?9.? Traditional designs and graphic art of Qeshm
?10.? Anecdotes of sailors

Notable Community Participation
The inventories and the reading material that the project intends to produce will be based on the local and traditional knowledge of the coastal communities of Qeshm. The local knowledge on each topic will be gathered with the participation of these communities.
The project also aims to promote the village libraries as local networks among a number of villages which requires the direct involvement of the community.
