The Project area is characterized by high rates of population growth, poverty due to lack of viable alternative income sources, land scarcity,land degradation problems, scarcity of fuel wood low crop yields due to fragmented land holdings and poor agronomic practices.

The Project aims at promoting Community based agroforestry and improved land management practices to reduce biodiversity loss, conserve and foster sustainable land management and improved livelihoods of the people living around the mountain Elgon fragile ecosystem. The Project promotes soil and water conservation for increased productivity and agrobiodiversity conservation through integrated approaches.

Activities being promoted include among others beekeeping, animal rearing, backyard gardening and growing of multipurpose trees. stabilisation of soils on steep slopes, increase productivity, provide food, fodder, fruits, fuel wood, poles and timber for construction, stakes for climbing crops, providing income for the rural community and conservation of the threatened fragile ecosystems.

The GEF focal area addressed is Land degradation. KIFANGO's partners include the mbale district local government and the Green Belt movement.

The project targets communities living around the Mt. Elgon Fragile ecosystems that are under threat from human pressure. Women, men and Youth are actively involved in the project activities.
