MAZIVANDAGARA INTEGRATED CATCHMENT MANAGEMENT PROGRAMME FOR REVERSING LAND DEGRADATION IN CHIREDZI DISTRICT IN MASVINGO PROVINCE
t his project group comprises of 44 households from Sabhuku Manjira and the neighboring village heads.The project commenced in 2001 and is located about 97km from chiredzi town. The project focuses on the following critical areas
-rehabilitation and construction of the Ndongo ruins and associated places / sites of cultural and historical significance
-gully and donga rehabilitation
-awareness on culture and environment
-forest and woodland management
-protection of the land from accelerated degradation
The community has also set aside for conservation more than 30 ha of woodland that surrounds the Ngongo ruins and their traditional burial place.The comunity is also involved in watershed management involving gully reclamation through construction of stone bounds.The community is also involved in livelihoods projects such as gardening and the small grains or sustainable agriculture. They are also working in their fields restoring land threatened by rill and gully erosion.

-to properly and effectively manage and maintain existing communal woodlands , forests, and wetlands.
-to rehabilitate degraded land to reduce and stabilize the local ecological system from threats of erosion and siltation
- to rehabilitate and maintain existing wetland areas so as to increase water bodies
-to promote the use of renewable /alternative sources of energy as a mitigation against deforestation, siltation, and erosion
-to promote water harvesting
-to promote information dissemination and sharing among local conservation groups andlocal communitie

Capacity - Building Component
The project is aimed at strengthening the community`s capacity to properly , effectively and holistically manage existing forests, woodlands and wetlands/ water systems for purposes of both mitigating climate change and siltation of save river.this will be achievd through workshops, undertaking field visits and look and learn tours as well as meetings .
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
a number of projects are being implemented by the community. these include sustainable agriculture, nutritional gardening, mopane worm collection and sale, marula wine production among others.the livelihoods projects l helps in complementing activities funded under GEFSGP thereby contributing towards poverty reduction and sustainability.
