Conservation of Endangered Orchids and Cultivation of Hybrid Orchids through Participatory Approach by Community Based Women Groups
The Phalung Valley, known to have rich biodiversity including a large number of epiphytic and terrestrial orchids, is one of the ?Orchid hotspots? among the few areas of Nepal. The rapid destruction of forests in the valley is contributing to the loss of biodiversity including the valuable orchids. IUCN has listed 11 species of Orchid found in Nepal, which are extinct, critically endangered, vulnerable, and near threatened. Exact number of threatened species from Phalung Valley and adjacent areas is not known and it needs an immediate action to conserve in situ and ex-situ the remaining species. The project will conserve these endagnered orchid managing the forest ecosystem and also provide women members the opportunity for income generation through the cultivation and marketing of high- value tissue cultured hybrid orchids in groups. Further, the project will also help to manage the orchidarium in transparent way so that such model could be replicated in other area for the orchid conservation.
